In France, we are reinventing the way to create silk. This is no longer done in cocoons, but directly on 3D objects to create 3D silk.
But first of all, it is important to know the traditional way in which silk is made:
The cocoons (with the silkworms inside) are placed in an oven (at 70 or 80°C) to kill the chrysalis, then soaked in boiling water. They are then stirred with a small broom to find the end of the thread. A reel recovers the threads of several cocoons and reunites them into a single thread: the raw silk.
That’s why, thanks to an innovative process, 3D silk Made in France, becomes an innovative and exceptional material.
With its unique know-how, this start-up masters the shaping of a new material. A natural non-woven silk. From this technique, geometrical and organic forms in two or three dimensions are born. This silk is a light material, delicate it also sparkles. When the silk leaves the workshop, it can be dyed, embroidered, sewn, pleated, etc. It is also possible to include elements at the time of spinning, embroidery, gold sequins …
Silk is one of the strongest fibers used in textiles. Here, all the components of natural silk are preserved: sericin and fibroin. Sericin is usually removed from textiles, but it is a natural glue.
Process of creation of this 3D silk:
In the heart of the mulberry fields, this silk is produced in an old silkworm nursery in the Cevennes. Educated for 30 days, the insects are scrupulously selected for the quality of their thread and the color of their silk. Once in the workshop, the silkworms are placed delicately on molds and meticulously reproduce shapes in two or three dimensions. When the molds are covered, the silk can be harvested by our craftsmen. Many transformations are possible. The start-up works with a network of craftsmen with specialized know-how (folders, dyers, embroiderers, etc.). They can bring new aesthetic qualities to the material.
