Pineapple leather : pinatex leather
This non-woven fabric is becoming a fabric of choice for fashion designers who want to give eco-sustainable dimension to their business model. In fact, pineapple leather is a great alternative to leather and petroleum-based textile products. It’s an eco-sustainable non-woven, available from a single supplier for the moment. It’s a non-woven material based on long fibres, like a felt.
This pineapple fiber is made of fibres extracted from pineapple leaves. These leaves are collected on the plantations before undergoing an industrial treatment that will lead to the textile. Although, its somewhat original appearance is similar to canvas, this new textile can easily be dyed, printed or processed to create different types of textures (including animal leather). Moreover, according to the latest estimates, 1,000m2 of Piñatex will be sold each year by 2018.
The properties :
This material is also of high quality. Indeed, this leather is solid, thin, versatile, breathable, soft, light, flexible. Another important detail is that it can be printed, sewn and cut. This material also, offers different thicknesses depending on the use.
Colors : classic, timeless and unisex. For the brillant color : It’s shiny, smooth and firm.
On average, to produce 1m2 of Piñatex, 480 leaves or 16 pineapples, are needed. These leaves are then sent to England and spain to be transformed into non-woven mesh.
A valuable advantage over leather is that the waste produced by this fire represents 5% of the raw material, compared to 25% for leather. And this waste also represents a cost!
