In France, the way of creating silk is being reinvented. This is no longer done in cocoon, but directly on 3D objects to create 3D silk.

But first of all, it is important to know the traditional way silk is made : The cocoons (with the silkworms inside) are placed in an oven (at 70 or 80°C) to kill the chrysalis, then soaked in boiling water. They are then stirred with a small broom which is used to find the end of the wire. A reel recovers the threads of several cocoons and joins them in a single thread : the greyed silk.

Thanks to an innovative process, 3D Silk Made in France becomes an innovative and exceptional material.

With its unique know-how, this startup masters the shaping of a new material. A natural silk not woven. From this technique, geometric, two or three dimensional organic forms are born. This silk is a light material, delicate it also sparkles. When the silk comes out of the workshop, it can be dyed, embroidery, gold sequins…

Silk is one of the most resistant fibres used in textiles. Here, all the components of natural silk are preserved : sericin and fibroin. Sericin is usually removed in the textile or it is a natural glue.

Process of creating this 3D silk :

At the heart of the mulberry fields, this silk is produced in a former silk factory in the Cévennes. Trained for 30 days , the insects are scrupulously selected for the quality of their yarn and for the color of their silk. Once in the workshop, silkworms are placed  delicately on molds and meticulously reproduce two or three dimensional shapes. When the moulds are covered, the silk can be harvested by our craftsmen. Many transformations are possible. The startup works with a network of craftsmen with cutting-edge know-how (pleaters, dyers, embroiderers, etc). They can bring new aesthetic qualities to the material.
